i made my own baby food, pureeing and then freezing the food in ice cube trays. i think one cube was about a tablespoon. he usually ate about 1 and a half cubes of whatever veg or fruit i had. i just fed him until he was done.
if you are asking about cereal, i poured a little out in a bowl, then poured a little bit of powdered formula on it, then mixed it with water to make a thin "gruel". you could use breast milk too. hope this helps.

My son is 8 months old and I started feeding him solid food around that age too. I asked his pediatrician the same question she said feed him until he acts like he is no longer intrested in eating (until HE is full) my son eats alot but hes healthy but if you are concerned hes not eating enough or maybe hes eating to much then ask his pediatrician. Hope this helps.

If you are starting with rice cereal, about 1/4 cup of very thin gruel at a feeding is fine (about the equivalent of a small jar of baby food). The baby will spit most of it back out onto his/her face learning how to swallow solids, just scrape it off with the spoon and shovel it back in. He will still be getting most of his caloric needs from formula or breast millk at this age.

I just fed my son until he refused more. Usually I would serve several different foods and keep trying spoonfuls of each until he decided he was done. "A little food goes a long way" was what my doctor said when I worried my son wasn't getting enough of this or that.
