sometimes it over heats before the fan comes on.other times it will come on when the temperature rises to the proper temperature.what are some of the causes of this aggravasion.

You have a bad temperature switch that controls the fan. There is a sensor at the opposite end of the wires that go into the fan. Find it and replace it.

Hi!
A 1993 Sunbird would have an electric rad fan. I suspect it is a loose wire or a bad temperature sensor that is causing your trouble.

The cooling fan relay could have burned contacts, or the cooling fan temp sensor may be coated with film from old coolant...

Temperature sensor is bad.... call advance auto and see how much it goes for.
