Telephones (land-based, wired). Mail. I used to have pen-pals. I could send a one-sheet air-letter by mail for 15 cents to Europe or 25 cents to Asia. That was a lot of money, but it was cheaper than sending letters in envelopes. In envelopes, it was valued by the 1/2-ounce. It was hard to call distant cities. I picked up the telephone, waited for the operator to answer, "Number plea-ahs?" Then I said, "Long distance?" She asked, "What city?" I replied, "Chicago?" She asked, "What numbah?" "Superior ny-unn fy-uv eight," I said. "Moment, plea-ahs," she replied. And in the next few moments, I was connected.
