find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
dont try to lose more than 1-2lbs a week - its not healthy to lose more.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried - no junk food.

I lost 20 lbs in about a month (and have kept it off 14 months later) by just cutting back on what I was eating. I try not to eat anything after about 4pm and don't eat ANY red meat (NO cheeseburgers) also no french fries.
Just doing that made me lost 15 lbs in a couple weeks. The next 5 lbs I lost by continuing to do that but also mix in some running. Just have him start slow and consistency (with both the diet and the running) is the most important thing. Just run like 3 days a week to start.
Just doing those 2 things helped me lose 20 lbs in about a month.
Losing weight isn't "hard" as in complicated or difficult. It's just a matter of mainly cutting back on eating crap- and to a lesser extent mix in some exercising. The diet is by far the most important part, though.
