My friends dads old car broke when the steering and ignition all locked up, so we took off the whole ignition and steering wheel lock mechanism. I'm not sure why it won't start...we recently charged the battery. When we turn the "key"(we used a screwdriver), the engine makes the starting sound, and it begins to turn over, but it won't catch and then the car just shuts off (enginewise). Does anyone know whats going on and how we can fix it (at home, no money)?

It is one thing to turn the engine over...It is quite another to have a spark at the plugs. Maybe your modified screwdriver key won't connect the electrical because it ain't the key. You need spark....have someone crank it while you pull a wire off. If you get jolted, you got spark. Check fuel filter.

there is a switch in side under the ignition switch that has to have the key in and the switch working. It is not a neutral safety switch. it's actually a anti theft device, mine went bad and it cost me 200.00 to have it replaced. you might borrow a electrical test Gage and make sure your getting electricity through the wiring to the starter full time.
