Sorry im confused i know some handicap people like to be called hani-capable. But then how is mentally handicap = mentally handi-capable. I like to call a spade a spade and a retard is a retard. I never use this word in a bad way. I think retards are great people. They appear happier than you and me, there something i can learn from them, and that is not to overthink things and to be happy. What do you think?>

Even the politically correct term of "developmentally disabled" leaves something to be desired. Whichever term you use, phrase it as "people with mental retardation" or "people with a handicap." This places their personhood first and their disability second. "The man with a missing leg" vs. "the one-legged man", The soldier with a head trauma vs the brain-injured soldier.

Retardation/Retarded used to be an acceptable term. But, when that became used in a mean, derogatory way, "Special" was then the acceptable name. But, even now people use that word the same way that people used to say "You retard!" Now, it is "You are special." So, the politically correct name keeps on changing as people use it it a way to poke fun of others. Perhaps, you are a bit old-fashioned. It sounds really harsh to us today, though.

It's political correctness. Handicapped people are not handi-capable. They're handicapped.

Trying not to offend people is a chore. That's why I just call everyone Bob.

I think you're walking on thin ice, but if you can post this without getting "fined" for offending someone, here's to you!
