I'll usually try the generic brand, but sometimes they're not as good. Other times, I can't tell a difference. If I can't tell a difference, then going forward, I'll buy the store brand.

There is much waste buying name brands. People buy name brands for many reasons. The most common would be trust and quality. I buy both generic and name brands because with some products you get what you pay for. Example: Miracle Whip- I have never found a generic that comes close.

Brand name groceries are facing strong competitions from the store brand according to Wall Street Journal. For instance, Kleenex. I think it is the matter of time for companies to rethink about the brand name effect on general public.
Anyway, doesn't it sound like an alarm as the recent huge pet food recall?
The balance between quality and price is what important to me.

I generally buy what is on sale not by brand; however there are a few items like peanut butter and toothpaste where I prefer a certain brand so I buy it.
I think people just feel safer with what they've seen advertised on tv.

The majority of the time we are wasting money. But in some cases name-brand food does taste better.

People tend to assume (because it used to be so) that an established business won't want to tarnish their name by selling an inferior product. Since companies started diversifying, though, this no longer holds true as often as it once did.
