There are several species of mammals known as "anteaters" because they show similar specializations to feed on ants and termites; these species occur in different parts of the world:
- The South American anteaters belong to order Xenarthra (same as armadillos). There's the giant anteater

and a few smaller species such as this one

- The aardvark is an African anteater. It is a unique mammal and belongs in its own order, the Tubulidentata:

- Other specialized anteaters that live in parts of Africa and Asia are the pangolins. They belong to order Pholidota. This is one of the species:

Calameci has it correct, but there is one other
creature, often called a spiny anteater. This is
a monotreme, an egg-laying mammal related to the platypus. It lives in Australia and New
Guinea.
