Follow the Great Circle Route. The shortest distance is a line that bisects the earth. Depending on which part of North America you start in and where you want to go, North by Northeast is the general answer.

It all depends upon how long or short you want your trip to be. Start anywhere in North America and begin traveling in a straight geodesic [geodesic is the shortest distance between two points on a curved surface] and you eventually get to Europe no mater what your starting heading was. But, a heading of ENE should get you there the soonest.

You could go north, over the pole, and end up in Russia or Scandinavia. You could go south, which would take a while, and end up in southern Europe. You could go west, over Asia, and into Russia. Or the traditional route would be east, over the Atlantic and into western Europe.

You can go to Europe either way, west or east, but of course the shortest way would be east across the Atlantic ocean, and you'd have to fly or take a boat
