Driving less, smaller cars, using mass transit, I don't know.
Here in Germany a gallon (US) is around $6 now.
I'm glad I dumped my car six years ago, but my daily trip to the office is only 20 minutes by bike.
Despite increasing petrol prices, the number of cars is still increasing too.
People tend to save on food, holidays, cultural events, etc. but on their cars.

They have an excellent mass transit system and don't need to drive the 20+ miles a day americans do on their commute.

the cars get 3 times the fuel economy and on average they drive a third of what we do, therefore they pay less than we do

thats only 4 pounds a gallon. i think they make more money an hour than most developed nations.
