I am wondering if the area around the United Center is safe? I am going to look at a place on Leavitt and Jackson, and I am wondering if anyone else lives or has visited this area? I am only going to live here for a year but I need a place that my girlfriend can walk to the L and feel safe. Thanks in advance for your help!

Actually I love that area! Contrary to what ever one on here says..... I will share a secret with you.... it is NOT JUST BEING regentrified NOW. This area did a turn around years ago, when Oprah's show first set up in the area.

But unlike any other area in the city, there is still quiet, peace, tranquility, uncongested. It is afordable. It is one of the few place around town that still does not require permits to park on the street or where you must pay for parking, it is centrally located to everything!!! To the No. you find Ukrainian Village, Bucktown, etc, to the east you find the SouthLoop Gate area, etc. to the south you find the Little Italy / UIC area. Although beautiful, all these areas are congested with intolerable traffic and noise.... they also attract many undesirable people who just wonder into the neighborhoods to party.

The area is pretty safe.

.~good luck

The area is improving rapidly with gentrification, but in general I'd stay east of Damen during the evening at this point. Leavitt and Jackson is close to the rapidly improving areas, but might still be a little dicey at night. Once you reach Ashland, Ogden, or any of those streets, it's much safer and more pleasant.

I reinforce all of the Little Italy / UIC suggestions...the area directly around United Center, altho much better than 10 years ago...((thank you, Michael Jordan)) is still pretty dicey....

There are a number of better neighborhoods....Ukanian Village, Bucktown, Wicker Park...why United Center....

Check out some of the other areas first....United Center is a destination, not a neighborhood....

That area is gentrifying. A little north of the UC at Lake and Damen, new condos are being put up. You'll find more apartments a little south in the UIC area along Polk. I live equidistant between Medical District and Polk St. stations. I prefer to walk to Polk St. than Med District.

It's probably safe, but there are better areas to live in. It is slowly turning around to a nice neighborhood, but it is not there yet. Expect another 5-7 years before the riff-raff gets booted out.

I've been in that area. It's right by Rush Presbyterian Hospital. I encourage you to look in the Little Italy area, which is right there by Rush and UIC and convenient to the L.

south bend isn't safe...and we're 2 hours from chicago. michigan city, in would be a better bet, but its just under a hour away. check out hillside or bolingbrook (although its kinda like south bend) illinois.
