I am starting a dogwalking business in Montana, and I am wondering if I have to apply for Federal and State tax ID numbers if I am not going to hire any employees? Also, does anyone know what to do in my state as far as business licensing? Thanks so much ahead of time! It's all Greek to me as of now, but everyone starts somewhere!

Get an Employee Identification Number from the Feds. If you go big time, you'll have to give this to any customer who pays you more than $600 a year, because they'll need to report their payment to you on a 1099, especially if they're in the dog business and want to write you off as an expense. Either way, you can keep the EIN, and give this out with any future business dealings. It's safer that giving out your SSI number.

Can't help you on the state level, since all states like to pilliage their citizens in a different manner. Most counties and cities have business license requirements, and often have web sites that explain everything.
Good luck to you. Work hard and prosper!

Generally, you have to have a home in the state to get a business license. Find your local chamber of commerce and get the ID numbers.

You can simply be a sole proprietorship and use your social security number.
