Depends how you look at it.
If you take Steve B's 'Capitalist' view, then, obviously not. People are able to make money in the career.
If you take my view that Capitalism can be a flawed, imperfect system then (albeit not living in the USA) I'd say there probably are too many for the good of society - i.e. they promote the needlessly litigious society that Carrie S refers to. Just because you can make money out of something doesn't make it good or right.

USA operates something known as 'Capitalism' (look it up = plainly you have never heard of the concept).

In a Capitalist system the citizens are free to choose their own profession.

If too many choose the same profession, competition amongst them will reduce the prices they can charge.

Currently in USA, Lawyers are able to command excessive fees - so rather than an excess, this suggests a shortage !!!

(Its like houses in UK - house prices rise because there is a shortage of houses and the Government conspires to maintain that shortage via the planning system).

Are there an excess of lawyers?

No, because US is a litigious nation and will sue anyone they can rather than work things out through talking.

Lawyers get paid a lot of money so it is a good career which is why a lot of people are studying it.

Yes probably.

The long term effects will be a lot of lawyers out of work.

I think current day Americans studying probably have $ signs in front of their eyes.
