new laptop come with li-ion battery, a smart & effiecient one, work really well with operating system power management. this type of battery must never left completely drain even when you are not using it. it must be charge & it can never be overcharge even when you left the power cable connected & switch on. when there's a nearby power socket, plug it in & use it. use the battery only when you are mobile but never let the battery drain more than 15% (like mark.s said), that'll be the maximum limit (not recommended). you can fully charge your battery while using it any time, even after you bought it but never let the battery go flat! this will shorten the battery life & can damage it. when you are not using your laptop for a long period of time (more than a month), take out your battery but remember to charge it at least once a month. when using ni-cad battery (older version) is different matter.

The main thing is this. If you are home, ALWAYS use it plugged in. If you are out and about using, do not use it while the battery's life is below 15%. I bought an extra battery for mine so when it does I can trade it out. If you follow these simple rules, the batteries should outlast your pc! (meaning you will upgrade the pc)

Let it go totally flat, then leave it on charge for a good 24hours without using the laptop.

Charge it all the way and use it (li-ion is not supposed to have the memory problems Ni-cads had)
