Grits is a type of maize porridge and a food common in the Southern United States consisting of coarsely ground corn. This is similar to many other thick maize-based porridges from around the world, described under the article on polenta. It also has a lesser resemblence to farina, a thinner porridge.
Hominy grits is another term for grits, but explicitly refers to grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy.

Where are you from! Technically they're 'hominy grit's an s not a z. Usually popular in southern states--whole or ground hulled corn from which the bran and germ have been removed by bleaching the whole kernels in a lye bath=hominy. The other half of the equation is calling them grits--coarsely ground hominy boiled & sometimes then fried. Eaten at breakfast or a side dish with meats. I prefer mine with butter and sugar for breakfast. They're somewhat like cream of wheat but have a gritty texture and of course, a little corn taste. DELICIOUS! Won't hurt you to try them with butter and sugar or syrup instead.
