I live on the north west side of Chicago and it is great, close to everything and very safe. In my area there are many jobs and schools, including private and public, some are better than others. Chicago is a pretty safe city with lot of jobs, good public transportation and lot of places to see and visit.
We have two zoos and lot's of parks and beautiful waterfront. i have been here for many years and love it. It is a great city to live in.

Well, since you live near Chicago, you may want to consider the roughly 4 to 4 1/2 drive east on I-94 through Michigan and into Canada (Windsor, specifically). We get many many young Americans here for trips. We have a ton of bars/clubs/restaurants right on, and just off, our main downtown street, Ouellette Avenue. And, of course, just a couple of blocks away from all that, we have Caesars Windsor, a hugh casino (gambling here is 19). We also have some high-end classy strip clubs downtown (if there is such a thing): Cheetah's, Million Dollar Saloon. All of these things are within about a 6 block range of each other, and Windsor is very safe to walk around in both day and night. There is plenty to do here if you want to get into some serious nightlife. Some downtown places I could recommend would be: Koko Pellies The Boom Boom Road Lefty's Lounge The Whiskey Peppers Papa Cheneys 129 Park Wherever you end up, have fun! P.S. Not sure if you know, but if you're driving over the border (considered a LAND crossing) no passports are required as yet. You do, however, need two pieces of documention: 1. valid government-issued photo ID such as your driver's licence and 2. your original birth certificate.

I'm not sure what these people call a "descent neighborhood" but, it's really not that expensive to live in Chicago, it can be expensive, but you really shouldn't have to pay $12-1400 a month for a 1 bedroom. You can definately find a 1 bedroom in a nice neighborhood for more like $750-1100 a month. So, $12-1400 is more like for people who are trying to live directly downtown in a building for the wealthy. I know people who live in nice neighborhoods around the irving park area that pay like $900 for a 2 bedroom. There are really neighorborhoods all over the city north and south where you can most definately find a 1 bedroom for under $1000. Those people that say you have to pay huge amounts of money for an apartment are people who just don't know the right websites, newspapers, etc to look at.

Anyway, Chicago is a cool place to be in the summer, but I hate it in the winter because I like to be outside a lot and the cold weather really depresses me and you can't really spend much time outdoors, if you do you'll probably be miserable. So, if you don't like long cold winters you may not be real happy around here. But like I said, summer is great, just a little too extremely hot. That's the thing with chicago, all of the weather is too extreme but the city itself as far as attractions are concerned, is pretty nice. For good websites to look for apartments, check the links below.

Unfortunately, decent means different things to different people. If you mean safe but still has some bars and a little country but within an hour of Chicago, now you are in my home town.

Cost of living will be number one. Single apartment in Chicago in an AVERAGE safe place will cost about 12-1400 a month. That's in the city.Western burbs you can get an apartment ( studio) for about 6-7 hundred but commute will be about a half hour depending on what you take.

Buy a home in that same area ( almost out of Cook county and almost in Du Page) will cost what I consider a bundle. My son just bought a 52 year old home for a quarter million. He is redoing the whole basement so will end up with about 290.00 in it. That is an older, large 2 bedroom with basement. Nothing fancy. He lives 2 miles from work, doesn't drive and the cab costs him about 400 a month on top of his other bills. Can get pricey quick. Find a town and go to their village hall, get a local map and ask Realtors. Most of them rent apartments also. I wish you luck. It is still better in the far southwest burbs than Chicago but its changed alot since I was a kid.

I have to tell you Chicago schools are not the best. especially the high school. We do have allot of schools because most schools are over populated. If you look thru other post with the same questions as yours you will find more than enough info. I must have answered this same question about 8 times already. Chicago has tons of jobs. FYI, Chicago is a city that is broken into neighborhoods. So your question would be " what neighborhoods are the safest in Chicago?" But we all know what you mean.

try oak park the housing prices are going up which isnt great but it is right bordering chicago on two sides and is about 20 or 30 minutes from downtown the public high school which i attend is excellent and hemmingway went there so did ludacris and the voice of homer simpson and ray croc(the mcdonalds creator) but also the private high school is also very good and they"re girls basketball team got second place in the whole staate a couple of years ago. I live there and yes it is very safe just dont wander into austin to far at night which is the part of chicago that borders oak park but otherwise inside of oak park it is very safe. just try googling the site it should be right there.

Before answerring your questions it would be helpful to know:

Are you looking to buy a home or rent? What is your budget?
That is one of the first things to consider.
Some places may be out of your budget. Where are you moving from?
Do you have a car or do you need to live close to public transportation to get to a job?

Do you have a high schooler? SO you want to make sure that a local high school is good and safe.

I live in the north suburbs, it's nice and safe, but it can be expensive depending on where you are living.

The best city in Chicago is.... [drum roll] CHICAGO!

Yes, Chicago is safe. I live in Chicago - not the suburbs - and I have never been mugged, stabbed, shot at, run over, or bludgeoned. Unless you live in the 'hood, you need not worry about that. Any Realtor or apartment finding agent will tell you if the area you are looking at is "unsafe."

The Chicago suburbs are the best place to live. there are too much gangs and drugs out there. Try a deep off suburb like Summit I live here and it's great!
