President Lincoln was at his wits end and desperately needed to get action done and enhance his re-election hopes . Due to his victories at Fort Henry and Donelson and the capture of Vicksburg which alongside of Gettysburg put the confederacy on their heels, Grant was approached by Lincoln to lead the Union armies. By Grant putting in an all offensive attacks and a disregard for lack of results he bled the Confederacy dry and forced Lee to surrender . With the help of Sherman and his other generals, Lincoln was able to gain reelection and Grant was on par as a great American hero . It is said Washington was the father of his country and Grant the father of the new republic of no slavery. It can be said that without Grant the war could have gone further with a lot more casualties that was unnecessary.

Union general who served in both the Western and Eastern theaters.
He built his reputation in the west by demanding nothing but unconditional surrender from Confederate forts in Tennessee. He would win the bloody engagement at Shiloh and would later succusfully capture Vicksburg by July 4, 1863. He would then finish up the Tennessee campaign in the Battles of Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain.
He was transfered to the East to join General Meade (Victor of the Battle of Gettysburg) in the final campaign against Lee. In this campaign, Grant would be the first Union commander to use the North's superior manpower against Lee to its fullest potential, knowing that Lee didn't have the strength to land a crushing defeat on his army. He would win the Battle of the Wilderness, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Battle of Five Forks. After capturing Richmond Virginia, Lee would surrender to Grant at Appomatox Court Hourse.
