It's a great show, but it's not the most profound piece of theatre to ever grace the stage (which can be said of most musicals on Broadway for the last decade or more). Broadway is no longer the mecca of high art. It is the altar upon which art has been sacrificed to the god of commerce. Broadway producers are primarily interested in profit, so they choose shows with wide appeal over ones that may have more substance.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with entertainment, and with spectacle. It has its place in the market, and is a good thing, allowing people to relax and escape the stresses of daily life. I think WIcked fits this mold. While there's a good story line beneath all the special effects, high dollar sets, and prime theatre location, it sometimes gets lost.

My advice? Look to the off-broadway theatres and the workshops. And read the book- that IS amazing.

It's not overrated. But people's expectations can become too high--hence the term 'overhyped'. This is NOT the fault of the show.

I did not like the professor or Boq very much, but other than that I thought it was amazing and I went back to see it again and I also tried to get front row lottery seats!
