Mujahideen (Arabic: مجاهدين, muǧāhidīn; Turkish: Mücait, literally "strugglers"), but more correctly the "Afghan Mujahideen" because any Muslim that struggles against non-Muslim aggression can be called "Mujahideen".

The US funded them so Afghanistan would not fall to communism and really they were not Bin Laden's group, they had their own leaders depending on what area they were from. Bin Laden was the conduit that carried US and Saudi money and equipment to them. Bin Laden gained some following, of a more international flavor, during the war which led to his forming "al-Qaeda" or "the Base" in Afghanistan after the war with the Soviets.

Ahmad Shāh Mas'ūd or "Lion of Panjshir" was a prominent leader of one faction of Mujahideen who was assassinated by al-Qaeda on September 9, 2001.

The group in question was called the mujahideen, which literally means "strugglers" in Arabic. They were funded by the CIA to combat the U.S.S.R.'s (a.k.a. Russia) invasion of Afghanistan from 1980-1988 when the Russians threw in the towel and withdrew their forces. Russia's invasion of Afghanistan is widely considered to be the U.S.S.R.'s Vietnam.

I wasn't aware that the US funded the Bin Laden group. I can't spell it either but you are obsviously thinking ot the Muhadjadeen who, as far as I know are not connected with the US. If you think that the US funded this group then you have got your facts wrong.
