I think it's because so many people instant message and text message. They shorten everything, especially for text messaging. Text messages are limited to 160 characters, so writing phonetically saves characters. A lot of people apparently think this is the only one can write on an electronic device. So, you get lots of abbreviations, "y" for why, "u" for you, "ur" for you're, your, and you are, etc. They seem to forget that when typing on something other than a cell phone, you're not usually limited by the number of characters you can use.

The USAmericans started a small reform of the English language, for instance Labor instead of labour. English is full of ridiculous spellings. I assume the person using "rite", although possibly uneducated or a bad speller, may be trying in his/her small way to bring about sensible reform.

I dunno but rite sounds right to me --- but I ain't all that picky about spellin anyhow... was just wondering how come the right way of writing right has the letter g in it ... and why does write begin with the letter w ... English sure is a confusing language ... it's no wonder people have such a hard time learning it as a second lauguage ...

I think many words have become shortened because of text messaging. I am very concerned about the kids of today knowing how to write correctly. There are questions on Y&A that I have to figure out, I can't just read, because of all the different spelling of common words.

Poor education standards - some people actually think this is the correct way to spell 'right' - very sad indeed!!

I really think they believe that is the way it is spelled. It is a valid word that is being used in the wrong sense.
