Political conflict like this has happened many times in US history. It might seem particularly virulent and destructive, today, since we face the grim prospect of having to live with the consequences, but it's not unusual, and the pendulum usually swings back towards centrism and grudging bi-partisanship, eventually.
It is very unfortunate, though, that the pendulum has swung over to the viscious partizanship side of things just as we're in the middle of what amounts to a global conflict. With the Republicans intent of fashioning events into an intermidable power-gauranteeing Orwellian 'war,' and Democrats intent on securing defeat at any price, the prospects for the nation emerging from the mess in good shape, or at all, seem slim.

Read some articles where the Democrats want Republicans to work with them to find common ground and see what Bush and Cheney answer on every issue. Pretty much answers that one.

It would be nice if the name calling and dogma were to go away. But that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
