Hyphenating is not the problem. Focusing too much oh heritage is a problem.

But there can be confusion. When I refer to a Mexican-American, am I refering to someone of maybe distant Mexican heritage, or am I refering to a recent immigrant from Mexico?

If words that someone uses to describe themselves causes you bitterness and prejudice, .....your problem.
