It's like that scene where Optimus (or whatever his name is) tell's Neo in the Matrix. "Do you believe in destiny, Neo?" (says Optimus). "Of course I don't, destiny means I can never choose my path in life, it's already chosen for me." (says Neo). Or somethign around those lines =).

Under the doctrine of absolute pre-determination, society cannot hold us responsible if we decide to get drunk and our actions result in an automobile accident. Such incidents would have been part of a chain of causality that originated with the beginning of the universe.
If we have no Free Will, there can be no responsibility and no punishments. Society could not exist.
The speculation that we have no free will defies common sense and our everyday experience of life. With the intervention of free will, our future, and thus the future of the universe, will follow a path different from the path it would have pursued without our intervention.
In addition to scientific considerations, common sense insists that Free Will exists. Who would deny that we have Free Will when we put one foot in front of the other and decide, of our own volition, of our own Free Will, to go for a walk or not go for a walk? It is clearly irrational to believe that a chain of causality (pre-determination) at the time of the Big Bang determines if we go for a walk this afternoon, or not.

Yes, I do believe in destiny and that's beacuse I have always strived for some things in my life and I'm drawn towards things that help me get there - but at the same time I feel my destiny is not written yet, it is being written as I go.
My character and my aspirations do indicate where I am going - but it is my choices in every moment that write down my destiny.
I don't see destiny as something already written down for me from my birth till my deathbed, no no no.
I'm the master of my destiny - and I feel free to know it's all up to me. Like one proverb goes:
''Every man is the architect of his fortune.''

There are a great many things not decided by self:
who your parents are
what country you're born in
are your parents poor or rich
do they get along, do they love each other
are your parents abusive
are you born with great or little intelligence, etc
However, we have the choice of heart. This may vary a little from locality to locality. Let's say you find $5000 and nobody but you knows about it. The choice of heart then is, 1 are you going to be honest and try to do the legal thing and find the owner
2. or are you going to steal it.
Choice of heart: when in school, do you study hard or not
These are the choices of mankind.

I don't believe in a Grand Destiny of Everything.
I do believe that a person's personality, history, relationships, etc predetermine their actions. Someone who knows me well can probably predict how I'm going to react to any given situation. I do make choices, but they're predetermined to a certain extent.
It's close to the Anglo-Saxon concept of wyrd, which you can read about in more detail here: http://www.wyrdwords.vispa.com/heathenry/whatwyrd.html

I think we make important choices guided by a higher power. We've got free-will over the minor stuff.

Yes I do but I believe in Karma and I believe a lot of things happened in this life because what we done in the past, however, we have some power to affect what happened next..but the trick is right method.
It is to be compassion, be kind. a lot of bad things happened in this life because we done bad past life so be kind and eventually it will catch up to you. believe me, it worked on me. but it take a lot.
most importantly, dont' expect reward, do your best and don't worry about the rest. goodluck
