Hostels are not the sort of place to give your girlfriend a good experience - best to have the privacy and comfort of a hotel.

However, London can be expensive. You say central London and wanting to be close to the London Eye, but i doubt if you will spend your entire time here. A short tube ride will get you there.

The best place is to have easy access to the "Eye" but be in a nice area of the Wet End. Cheaper areas are:

Victoria : http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/London/Victoria/
Paddington :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/London/Paddington/

but if you want to look at larger areas try here, where you can sort the results by price, location and star rating.

The Days Hotel at Waterloo is very close to the Eye, but I think the other areas will be better to stay in :

Sometimes there are hostels available for a small price. You can check into that. I had friends who traveled Europe like that and they had a great time!

I know you said you didn't want to do hostels, but it may be your only choice. Have you tried the travelodge website?

Check out this site

You can find hotels in that area and sort by Price/Star rating as well as see which landmarks/attractions they are near.

They got pics too.
