Clowns can be traumatic for children if they view them that way. A strange loud adult yelling and jumping in their face can frighten kids.

Also, there is the movie IT. I know a lot of my friends watched it when they were little (about 6-7 years old) and the experience of the movie followed them through life. I was born in 1984 and i think the movie came to video in the late 80's early 90's but i am not positive about this. I have talked to children who were in elementary school while i was in high school and very few of them found clowns scary while most people my age found clowns scary.

Because clowns are really scary. They have exaggerated expressions and they tend to approach you and engage you whether you want to or not.
Actually, I don't know that I was afraid of clowns as a child. I didn't find them creepy until I read about John Wayne Gacy and saw his picture in full clown makeup. I can never look at clowns the same way again.

Im 21 yrs old, and I HATE clowns. Of course I'm not as scared of them as I used to be when I was little, but they still freak me out. I cant even watch Stephen Kings It.... It started when I watched the movie Killer Clowns From Outer Space when I was a kid. Clowns suck! :o)

Why would someone be afraid of a group of people whose wardrobe leaves much to be desired? Are these hombres on the Fashion Police Most Wanted list?

I am. I don't know why. Maybe movies that have scary clowns in them have something to do with it.

I had a friend explain to me that he found it disturbing that people wanted to work around kids but not have the kids know what they really looked like or who they really were.
