Basic hosting plans can be cost $20-$40 year so it's a good deal considering that you are getting a free domain name ($10-15 value). Check out www.1and1.com - they have a plan for $3/month with a free domain name and some other extras.

Unless you want a free geocities or angelfire account..I'm pretty sure you're gonna need to pay to register any domain name.
