John G is an idiot and a liar (he couldn't possibly be breeding bettas if he doesn't even know they build bubble nests), anyone who has ever read even a paragraph or two about bettas knows that they build bubble nests to float their eggs in, and that the males guard it and the eggs and the fry (and if someone doesn't believe it, they can check out the provided links). Males generally only build bubble nests during the breeding season in the wild (which is right after the rainy season in their native Thailand), but in captivity, most of our regular care of the fish (feeding, routine water changes, and keeping the water at our room temperature) simulates their wild breeding conditions and prompts them to build nests at all times of the year. He will probably do it as long as he has plenty of good food to eat and clean water. It's nothing to worry about. It means he feels very good, physically, and about his surroundings, good enough, in fact, that he feels he could raise babies there. Good job! You sound like you're taking excellent care of him!

Bettas don't have a mating season. If the male has food, still water, and is healthy & happy. He'll build a nest, and mate/fight with any female that happens by. He isn't lonely as betta aren't social fish. (Unless you count threat displays, and fight as social.) He can't be kept with any betta male or female. He might mate with a female, but he'll attempt to drive her off afterwards to defend his nest. (In a tank this ends badly.)

They do it when they are happy as well as when they are about to mate. So a happy betta will always blow bubbles.
Or are you mating bettas right now? If so, he will stop building it when the female finds it acceptable.
An awesome site for bettas is http://www.bettatalk.com

bubble nests are good, it means he is happy and healthy enough to want to make a nice little spot in case a sexy female fish comes by.

It's something they do year round. If you destroy one bubble nest while cleaning, he's going to have another in the works, probably within a few days.

Male Bettas do not make nesting bubbles. Those are just byproducts of their breathing. Bettas breath mostly surface air. In fact, a male Betta will try to kill his female mate right after breeding if she can't escape or isn't taken away. He will similarly eat his young.

they don't really stop. it's a betta boy hobby if you will, something to keep them occupied, to show they're comfy in their surroundings. my boys do it on and off depending on their mood. some are in filtered tanks though, so they can't without it blowing away. i feel a bit guilty about that...

They probably wouldn't stop at all if left like that without a mate.
