sometimes i really do laugh out loud, but rarely. most of the time i just type it as a response, not really an action, if u get that? lol...

When I type LOL, I mean that I got a good laugh and it was worth it. I don't usually type that unless I find it funny. I guess it is a lot like laughing in public. If the timing is right, you laugh. There is nothing more annoying than inappropriate laughter.

I type lol to create the atmosphere as you say. I also do it to let the person know I'm being sarcastic and not to take what I say literally.

When I am actually laughing i put lmao, lol i usually used to as you said "lighten up the atmosphere" also, to let ppl know that I am joking.
