i think ryan cabrera is completely amazing and he doesn't get enough credit for his voice or song lyrics.

Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, now solo) brilliant lyricist and his bands had amazing songs to support them. I guess to bring it a little more into the mainstream Elliott Smith. That guy just wrote great songs, way better ones than Miss Misery. It all worked out ok, because he didn't want it, but definately underrated.

Danny Elfman. Most people know him as the lead singer of 80's pop/punk band Oingo Boingo. In addition to fronting a band that played sold out shows for over 20 years, Elfman is also one of the most accomplished composers of our time with over 60 film scores to his credit as well as some of the most popular shows on TV (The Simpsons). Oingo Boingo was never very popular with the mass audience, but that's exactly why I suggest that Elfman is the most under-rated musician.

I believe Jim Croce (died in a 1970's plane crash) is probably the most underrated musician of all time. You should check out some of his works like "lover's cross", "workin' at the carwash blues", and "which way are you going."
