In the vast majority of longer format games, you must take 20 wickets in order to win a match (if you include retired hurt as a wicket and unless the losing team has declared an innings). This means that regardless of the amount of runs it takes, the important part of the game is to take wickets and win the game.
One day cricket was introduced after the longer form of the game and kept the same standards and measures as the traditional game (I struggle to remember strike rates ever being mentioned when I was growing up).
That is why the wickets taken are offically valued above the average when recording bowling performances.
In some cases the method may not seem to reflect the best bowling performance but whilst this method is not flawless then the following examples can highlight the flaws of the "average" method:
A good international bowler's average will be approximately 25 runs per wicket. If one bowler takes 1 wicket for 9 runs then that is a good average, if another bowler takes 4 wickets for 80 runs then he has helped the team more by getting 4 wickets cheaper than expected (imagine what an impact those 4 wickets would have had if you were playing England and the 4 wickets were Pietersen, Collingwood and...well anybody else).
One bowler begins bowling at the start of the innings and takes the wicket of a great batsman (averages 55 runs per wicket) but concedes 35 runs doing it. His figures of 1 wicket for 35 runs doesn't look particularly impressive but, going by the averages, he has saved 20 runs. Another bowler in the same match only bowls at tail-enders, he takes 1 wickets for 25 runs. The batsman whose wicket he takes only normally average 8 runs per wicket.
There is no method for determining which bowling performance has the biggest impact on a match which is 100% consistent however I think the method we have at the moment isn't that far off.
Hope this helps.

What the!!!?
A Scots woman talking about cricket and actually making some kind of sense.....hang on I have been to the pub, maybe this is a dream.......
If not then McGraths effort will look better on his seasons/career average but think about it in this simplified way...Just say the following stats were true....
McGrath 2 wickets for 2 runs. (1 wicket per run)
Tait 8 wickets for 24 runs. (1 wicket for every 3 runs)
Taits looks more impressive because he's took more wickets regardless of how many runs were conceded.....does it make any sense??? It was invented by the English after all...

I too consider the performance of Mc Grath far better than Tait nmot only because of economy rate, but because he accounted for the top order batsmen of South Africa, which put them under lot of pressure and take Tait could take advantage of this weakness of South African Batsmen

McGrath took the 2nd,4th and the 5th wickets to fall breaking the backbone of South African Innings.
Tait took the 3rd,6th,7th and 9th wickets to fall.He also gave away too many runs..
Judge yourself whether number alone counts.

See a doctor immediately.
You've put me below a frog and now you're asking cricket questions. You are obviously ill. The blood is draining from your brain. Go take some iron tablets, quick girl!!
