No, we don't and the world already knows what a colossal failure that the Bush administration is.

Why do we need a draft to put 500,000 on the ground?
Between all the services, reserves and Guard units, I'm sure we can come up with that many. Maybe not indefinitely, but for probably long enough.
maybe the Egyptians and the Saudis can throw in a couple hundred thousand, and pretend they care about their fellow Islams. How about tossing in a few Indonesians, they're Islamic, too. Talk about a good indicator of the type of people we're working with here, that they are willing to stand by and watch fellow believers slaughter one another, all in the name of Allah.

Instituting a draft probably wouldn't net the number and quality of troops you might expect. In prior wars, like WWI or WWII or even Korea, most young men drafted simply served. Americans were, by and large, less educated and more respecting of the law back then. Today, most Americans are well-aquainted with the concept of Civil Disobedience, and taught that it's more heroic to defy your country than to fight for it.
What a draft would do is create more momentum for the anti-war movement, which is why it gets brought up so often, even though it's vanishingly unlikely.

And nobody wants a non-volunteer armed forced. People don't want to be there, they aren't going to stand and fight the way volunteers do. They are going to crack faster than volunteers do, they perform worse than volunteers.. shall I go on? That and if they desert the country, where will the democrats get presidential candidates?
The troops in Iraq could win if we stop being such wusses about it and strike the fear of a butt kicking into the terrorists. There is no reason that it shouldn't be shock and awe the entire damn time.

May I refer you to the Vietnam War?
The draft was instituted to prolong a war that the United States was losing, so we could take more lives on both sides, suffer and inflict atrocities, and cause a bigger mess pulling out than the one we stepped into. The draft would only serve to further destabilize the region because we would be fighting a civil war for the Iraqi people. And who's to say that if the draft opened up that we wouldn't take the opportunity to invade Iran and start a conflict there.
...and if they do open up the draft, expect to see a ton of people moving to Canada or other countries to avoid it.

We have plenty of volunteer troops, there is no need for a draft. If Dems would stop trying to change the course, we will win, be finished and all could come home. The only thing obvious is the Dems want us to fail.

Win what war? The war in Iraq, or the War on Terror?
I don't suppose it matters as neither one will be won. You can't win a war on Terror...there will always be terrorist, so it is an on going thing...like the war on drugs, or as stupid as it sounds a war on prostitution.
The war in Iraq also can't be won, but at least we should help the Iraqi's 'put things back together' as much as is possible.
Just my opinion of course.

1. I did not know you are a general.
2. The problem in Iraq is Pres Bush has not allowed the troops to fight to win. No amount of troops will solve this problem

And what's that going to accomplish? We'll have a resurgance of such lovely things as fragging of Officers, Sergeants being shot in the back, drug use, etc. It'll be like Vietnam all over again.

Re-Instituting a draft would have a number of benefits. For one it would do away with our current mercenary military and create a more homogeneous representation of American society. And second it would prevent politicians from immediately resorting to war and aggression. No congressman or senator wants to explain to their constituents that they are sending their sons and daughters into battle with less than reputable intelligence information.

I agree with the draft part, the children of people making money of the war should serve too and you'll see how fast it ends.
