My son eats well - a combination of breast milk and formula (mostly breast milk), about every 3 hours during the day, and he sleeps through the night. I think he may be constipated. He has only had 2 bowel movments all day yesterday and today (2 in total not 2 each day)

I have twins and my doc told me that one bowel movement a day is fine and doesnt have to be any larger than the size of a quarter. Most of what they are consuming is a liquid and as long as they are passing urine and having a bowel movement every day they should be good.

Babies can go up to 5 days without a bowel movement. If the baby doesn't have a bowel movement after 5 days you need to contact your doctor. Unless your baby has hard pellet like stools or is screaming in pain while having a bowel movement otherwise he sounds like he is fine. I also have 3 month old but I feed formula as I couldn't breast feed and he has a bowel movement (sometimes more than one) every 3 or 4 days.

If he's straining to go and not passing a BM or just passing little pebbles - he is constipated. If he's not acting like he's miserable or uncomfortable, he's not. Babies' bowel habits change several times before they're a year old. What's normal this week may not be next week. What's normal for another kid isn't for your son.

If he's trying to go and can't, try taking his temperature rectally. This should stimulate him to go. Or you can buy glycerine suppositories.

If it becomes an ongoing issue, he can have a little juice - apple, pear, prune, cherry, or grape. He can have up to one ounce per month of his age up to twice a day. Start with an ounce once a day, and if it doesn't work, then increase it gradually. (You don't want to fill him on the juice or give him the runs!)

If you cut out the formula he won't get constipated. Formula has a lot of iron (and interferes with the absorption of many of the wonderful nutrients in breastmilk) which can constipate. I would advise you solely breastfeed. Pumping can provide milk while you're away at work or wherever, if need be.

My son is 14 months old (still breastfeeding) and he poops everyday.... but it is normal for babies to not go for 3-4 days sometimes.

Breast feed babies can go up to 3-4 days if not longer before movements.....formula fed every 2-3....breast milk and formula are very easy for the babies to digest, meaning the get alot out of it....so there is not much left to excrete....ONly if he starts to get fussy and cranky, and his stomach get a little firm then I would worry about constipation

ITS NORMAL...RELAX

I have a breastfed 5 month old and about two months ago he stopped pooping.

He used to go at least once a day...and then all of a sudden out of nowhere he started going once a week.

He still only goes once a week.

The doctor says that as long as it's not hard and dry and it doesn't hurt him ...it's ok.

I was still concerned because once it was hard for him and it was kinda hard, so the doctor said that I could give him an ounce or two of water everyday, and now that he's older they gave me the ok to mix in a little prune juice with that water...and it's still only once a week, but it's soft and he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort.

I also have started him on solids and we have prunes at least once a day, and I have the glycerine suppositories on hand...but I didn't feel comfortable either about using those regularly...

The safest thing to me feels like doing something dietary rather than chemically to alter his movements...and so far it's working pretty well.

He poops every sunday morning...like clock work...lol

It's not abnormal, just watch out for hard or dry ones...then you're talking about constipation...if they are soft but infrequent...it's not constipation...it's just her schedule.

Good Luck

***PS - Don't you remember being a kid and not going for a week? I remember thinking my dad was weird because he pooped everyday...lol. I talked to my husband about it and he said the same thing...he remembers going to "outdoor education" (camp) for a week and not pooping the entire time he was there...Children's systems are different than adults...just because she isn't on the same schedule as you...doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

If you've consulted a doctor. And she's not in pain. And you are doing what you can to naturally assist her....you're fine, she's fine, it's all fine. Don't worry.

My little girl has suffered from constipation since she was 2 mos old. It's only constipation if the BMs are infrequent (less than once a week), hard (small rabbit pellet-type poops), and painful. My little girl would SCREAM when she was trying to go.

It's normal for breastfed babies to go as little as once a week after the first few months. So if he's going once a day, then he sounds fine, especially if there is no pain or hard poops.

Constipation is defined as hard dry pellets.
Breastfed babies at that age commonly go several days between bowel movements.

If you want to be sure that he will not be constipated just give only breastmilk. It is a natural laxative :D

my doc told me a breastfed baby can go up to a week without a bowel movement as long as their stomach is not hard and unusally fussy that is fine
