no once the ball hits something (wall) it is like the ball hits the ground

No out. The ball must be caught in flight. Caroming off the wall ends the "flight" part of the play.

As noted, park-specific ground rules can modify this. The catwalks at Tropicana Field, for example, are not considered to have ended the ball's flight if struck. A ball in flight, interrupted by a catwalk, is still eligible to be caught for an out. But I don't know of any park that grants that sort of waiver for a wall carom.

I always assumed that it was a four base error but if it isn't the only thing I can think of is that it was a homerun because it never touched his glove. It was just as if it hit the top of the fence and went over. Maybe the other reason was the scorer felt sorry for him and figured since he looked so rediculous he should be given a break from the error. No need to add insult to injury.

A ball coming off a wall in fair territory is in play except when the ground rules for that particular field say otherwise. The grounds rules can include a HR line.

The following links include the rule book. The ground rules for every MLB stadium are available from the sites of each team, through MLB.

Hope this helps.
