Please no bashing the Bush admin.. I dont like him too much myself.. Simple question...
Or do they need a heavy handed unrestricted leader (dictator) (not as bad as Saddam) to guide them in that direction?

They can if they WANT a democracy like the USA.
Unfortunately they don't.
They want a constitution based upon Religious ideals.
That is not a democracy.
Theocracy is God rule.
There is no true theocracy on earth today but there may be soon.

The fact is that the majority of the people living in those countries have never known peace as we know it. They are born in violence and chaos and believe (rightly or wrongly) that their leaders are emissaries of God (their God), and that what they teach or tell them is the truth.
They view us as the villain and we view them as not much better. So, who is right? We have our beliefs and they have theirs, and never the twain shall meet. We should mind our business, not interfere in foreign politics or try to make these countries live like we do, it will never happen.
You don't see us kicking dust in China, if we tried that over there, we'd better learn to speak Chinese. We should respect other countries culture. As for Saddam or someone like him, a puppet is a puppet, regarless of who pulls the strings.

Democracy is a Christian value--them folks are Muslims. Sorta like the oil in water scenario. Just how much more of this massacre do you need to see in order to reach that conclusion?

3 generations.. that is what you would truly need to effectively change their mentality enough to have a sustaining democracy.. so we either have to give them the minimum of 60 years they need (that is the minimum of when the 3rd generation would be able to take over.. more realistically it will be 70-90 years) or we have to set up a government with a stronger central power as you have mentioned.

No because you can not force democracy. Democracy is an evolution that needs time to flourish- lots of time. At least that is what my Prof. tells me.
