My laptop periodically goes through stages where it is very slow, and the hard drive activity light is solid, not blinking like it should be, but completely solid green. This problem usually happens aroudn midnight each night, but also frequently occur in the middle of the day. Any help would be appreciated. I have a Dell Insipron 1200 if that helps.

It sounds like it is churning the disk for some reason.

Do you have Antivirus? Or anti-spyware? If so when does it check the disk?

DO you have it set up to automatically run a scandisk, or to defragment the hard drive automatically?

Check the Scheduled Tasks folder in the Control Panel.

Could be automatic Windows Updates or maybe you're unning an anti-virus utility in the background with a scheduled maintenance time.
