The Space Ship 1 uses a revolutionary approach to re-enter and transit the mesopause. It's safer and easier to control.

Some of the Shuttle's design comes from the early 1950's,
ie backward ball cone design to create a very blunt shock wave. The Shuttle's 40 degree nose up with alternating 80 deg wing roll is archaic and will be changed in the next Shuttle.

no. If you look at the big picture, if we were to replace the shuttle for something like spaceship one, we would have to make the ship ten times bigger to get a crew of 7 and payload into orbit. That would mean back to the drawing board. Plus we would need a bigger launch vehicle. The shuttle employs the 747 to get it from California to Florida. It would need a much larger plane to get it at the right altitude for liftoff, or separation. The shuttle will be obsolete in a few years anyway. Lets give the shuttles replacement a chance before we call it obsolete.

The X prize winner goes up and comes down. The shuttle carries a crew, orbits and has delivered payloads like the Hubble

No. Because the X-prize winner cannot reach orbit. The x-prize winning SpaceShip One makes the X-15 or the Mercury Redstone rocket outdated, but not anything that can make it to orbit.
