When that time came for each of our older kids my husband told them that Santa is the spirit of Christmas. He is not a big fat guy in a red suit, it is the spirit of giving that lives inside each and every one of us. To believe in 'Santa' means that you believe in the spirit of giving. They chose to say they believe in 'Santa' and always will.

There are three stages of belief in Santa Claus:
1) There is a Santa
2) There is no Santa
3) I am Santa

I'd tell them the truth when they ask, which is this: The TRUTH is so complex that people tell a story about Santa Claus because the truth is unbelievable. The Truth is that adults all over the world have chosen one day as the day when all children, even if they're poor, will get a present. People who don't even have kids or know any kids will buy presents for poor children so eveyrone gets one. It's hard to understand that everyone in the world will agree on one thing, so we tell a story about Santa Claus, since it's easier to understand. I mean, that's the truth, right? And it IS hard to believe.

I believe this is the real story about Santa :--
Once upon a time there lived a missionary who loved kids. During Christmas, he would go to the tops of houses and deliver gifts and parcels to the children. The children loved him and called him Santa Claus.
Nowadays the parents drop gifts and say that Santa Claus came when u were sleeping.
You can also keep gifts at the bottom of the Christmas tree in the night. But make sure ur child is in deep sleep. Tell ur child bout Santa Claus. And tell ur child tat Santa must have come in the night to drop a gift for ya!

First, figure out if they already know the answer or are asking out of sheer curiousity. If it's the former, tell them that Santa Claus is a tradition, much like Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. He was imagined to make people happy and bring joy to children all over the world. Ask them to remember their greatest Santa memory and you can have a great discussion about it.
If it' s just curiousity, you could always use the old "sometimes santa needs a little help from mommy and daddy" story, but that doesn't always work.

I think that is something that YOU should really decide yourself. I don't mean to say that in a bad way.. but when it comes to parenting, looking for help from others online.. is probably not the best way to go about it.

At the same time, I would say that the best thing to do .. is tell the truth.. If they ask. If they don't ask, just go with it. I think that's the way most parents do it. Once the kids say "Johnny says there's no Santa Clause".. then maybe it's time to say.. But I wouldn't go to them specifically and say "I have something to tell you". I think it could be a lot more shocking if you up and tell them out of the blue.. rather than them 'discovering' and then asking questions. Just my thought though..

Tell them that your family is so fortunate to have eachother & that there is no need for Santa Clause to bring them anything more than the beautiful family that you have been blessed with. Then just wait it out until they realize that you were Santa all along.
Maybe they already know there is no Santa, but they don't want to break your heart by telling you that they have known the truth all along-because maybe they still want to be mommy's lil girl/boy.

This is what I told my kids: The truth- Many years ago, there was a preist, he became a priest because his father died, and back then you inherited the position. He also inherited lots and lots of money. However, he had taken a vow of poverty. So, here he was in his red priest outfit and walking down the street, he overheard a daughter and father having a conversation. She was crying about not having a dowry and not being able to get married. That night, the priest, Nicholas, dropped a bag of coins into the girls stockings. The next day, she found them. This tradition carries on even today with St. Nick, he uses us parents though as his elves.... Thats what I used and they were all good with that explanation.

First tell them about Christ which is the true meaning of Christmas and Saint Nick was a Christian who made toys and had given to the orphans in his home town which was the result of his fruit of love. But today Santa Clause is a mythical being who is like an superman who knows all and sees all and rewards those who do good with toys but the truth is if Santa was to give on account of ones goodness, he would only bring switches to all. So The birth of Christ is to redeem mankind from Satan, sickness and spiritual and physical death this is what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.

tell them the truth that a long time a person called St. Nicolas felt sorry for the poor and distributed goodies to every poor family. In Holland santa claus day is celebrated on the 5th of December so it does not coincide with Christmas, which has a different meaning entirely as we celebrate the birth of Christ, but then Christ is suppose to live in your heart all year round.

It depends on the age of the child. My daughter was probably seven . I always told her the santa she saw at the stores was only a helper.
When she was old enough to understand I came straight out and told her mommy and daddy buy the gifts and that santa was a real person at one time and he used to bring gifts to children.
I made sure she was "ready" to hear the truth. She did fine.

Tell them the truth. If you lie to them about Santa clause your just teaching them how to lie, just in an innocent way.
