I am 6 1/2 weeks pregnant..too early to find out the gender yet, but I know it's going to take me FOREVER to choose a name for my baby. Names, either boy or girl, for the last name Murphy would be greatly apprecited. I like single syllable names or names that could have a nice single syllable nick name. Thanks for all your help guys!!!

I'm not sure what style you're looking for; I know that people's personal tastes can be VERY different. However, I can relate to you in that it takes me FOREVER to make important decisions, and what's more important than the name you choose to give your baby? I'm not even pregnant yet, just hoping to get pregnant within the next year, and I'm already narrowing down baby-name choices.

That said, I would recommend two baby name books that I've been using and that have been very helpful. The first one is "The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method to Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby" by Laura Wattenberg. You can look up names you like for your baby, and it even gives suggestions of names for that child's brother or sister. It's eerie how good the suggestions are; I looked up my name, and my brother AND sister's names were listed as sibling names.

The second book is "The Baby Name Bible" by Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz. This book has more names than the first one, although some of them are pretty out-there. It also has fun lists...celebrity baby names, "If you like Charlotte, try these names...," etc. I often cross-reference between the two books.

In the meantime, here are some nice single syllable names for each gender:

Boys: Brent, Chase, Cole, Dean, Glenn, Grant, James, Joel, John, Jude, Kent, Kyle, Luke, Mark, Max, Miles, Noel, Scott, Sean, Troy, Ward

Girls: Anne, Belle, Brie, Brooke, Brynn, Claire, Dawn, Eve, Faith, Grace, Hope, Jade, Jewel, June, Kate, Maeve, Paige, Ruth, Quinn, Rose

At least you have a nice, normal last name, so I think you can be pretty flexible with what you choose for a first name. Good luck with your decision, and congratulations on your pregnancy!
