Do you have to be an attorney first or can you just go straight into being a judge after your law degree (LLB or JD)?

You become a U.S. District Court Judge by Presidential appointment and Senate confirmation. If you think you can just go to law school and get appointed a judge, you have a rude awakening coming. Technically I suppose you are "learned in the law" as the constitution requires, but in reality you don't have the credentials to get nominated or confirmed as a judge when you just get out of law school.
