I sit next to the guy that annoys me with everything he does. I probably wouldn't be so annoyed if he actually had some common sense & wasn't such an idiot. I can hear him breathing, talking on his phone & snacking on chips all day long. When he isn't doing this he's asking me questions that any idiot should know or he'll move stuff on my desk when I'm in other places in the office.
My boss refuses to deal with anyone in the office except for me. So when this idiot wants to talk to the main boss I have to screen him first to see if it's worth his time. I explained to my boss my position on the matter & he says I should go have drinks at lunch so calm my nerves. He seems to think that being drunk will help the matter.

1) Bring your iPod to work or use a white noise machine so you don't have to hear him breathe and chew.
2) If there are private offices or other cubes available, lobby for one of them - not to get away from your co-worker of course, but to be away from the main traffic pattern so that you can concentrate on the important work your boss has for you to do.
3) Tell Joe Idjet that your desk is off-limits and please don't touch. If he persists, fill something with marbles or other items that will make a loud noise when dropped and balance it precariously whenever you leave your desk.
4) Your boss doesn't sound much brighter if he is encouraging you to drink during your meal break....might be time to get away from your coworker altogether by moving to a new job! Or try involving your HR department if you have one - they may have some other ideas.

Good luck.

unfortunately your options are limited. I do not think that HR will do anything about some one being annoying. I would talk to the HR person just in case. You could search for another job, or just try to grin and bear it and remember that you don't have to go home to him. Hey it could be worse......does he smell?
