How about 999 written in a spacecraft?

Oh, you probably mean _largest_ number. The previous answer of 9!^9!^9! is certainly the largest so far, but I have to wonder whether 99!^9! or 9!^99! might be larger. For example, 3^3^3 is 19683, but 33^3 is 35937 and 3^33 is a whopping 5.559e+15. By analogy, I would pick 9!^99! as the largest, but I don't have enough numbers on my calculator to prove it.
