Hey, I am a freshman in a big state university and I am currently working on my transfer application to a more competitive college. However, I feel stuck about the manditory recomendation. All my classes are big lecture ones and the professors are inaccessiable (you know what goes in a state university), except one small class but the professor looks really rigorous (but she does praise me somehow as hard-working.....BTW, she is very very accessiable). So how should I ask recommendation from her. I don't even know how to start a conversation. Help! Thank you!

Go to her office during office hours. Tell her that you are hoping to transfer to another school. Ask her if she will write a recommendation. Offer to provide her with other information about yourself to help her.

I've written several recommendations for students. I always ask them to provide me with information about their background and for information about their GPA and classes they took. Since I am a B-School professor -- most of them already have a resume that they can give me.

I usually found it easy to write a letter -- since I would take an old one and tailor it to fit the particular student.

You should walk in with information that will help her write a good recommendation for you.

Start by going to office hours. Start talking about what you think of the class, what interests you. Getting to know your professor and she know you will help to get the recomendation. also talk about how you want to go to a more competitive college and ask nicely if she would like to write you a recomendation.

professors recognize that it is hard to get on a personal level with students, so just be upfront. that's what i did. explain that you are considering transferring and would like a recommendation. if this is the second time you're taking the class with the prof, then tell them how you did in the previous class and provide them with copies of any graded works that you have. the key is to give them any ammo that could help write a letter. if you don't have any materials that would help, then just tell them what you want to do with your life and education to help them get a better feel of who you are so they can see your ambition.

First thing you gotta do is stop being nervous. They aren't going to bite your head off if you try and talk to them. After a lecture go down and talk to the prof and talk to her (or really any of your profs), and if they're in a hurry ask if you can walk with them for a couple minutes to get time to ask about the recommendation. You should be good to go once you get the fortitude to talk to them.

I do know the feeling though, took me a while when I was in college to try and have any meaningful conversations with the profs. But once I did I felt stupid for being so afraid to do it earlier.

It would be best for you to make an appointment with her. Have a resume ready and let her know the purpose of the letter of recommendation that you need. Since you said she's noticed that you are a hard worker I'm sure she'll write a good letter for you. Good luck with your plans!

Be direct about it. Just walk into your professor's office and ask.
