Fish need to move to circulate water over their gills.

If they get caught in something (i.e. fishing nets) they can drown.

A goldfish is not from the fish type of anabantid (labyrinth fish) who would actually really drown if they do not swim up to the water surface to breathe in atmospheric air so it is impossible that it could have drowned.

Well, to get over it, just believe it is now happily swimming in fish heaven with ''angelfishes.''

By "drown" do you mean will it die if it breathes air? Of course fish can only live in water and they can't drown from water! It must have either died from old age or from a disease. Here are some possibilities: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/disease.html
It also could have died from stress. Fish die from stress all the time. From habitat changes, temperature changes, other annoying fish, etc.
Sorry about your loss...but it's just a fish. You can't expect them to live very long.

no they can drown of lack of to much air so dont take them out. but if you just got it the tempature change can stress it out to much ive lost many that way or if the cage is to small the body doesnt grow right and that could kill it. and you cant totally cover the top with no air holes.sorry of ur lost though
