What is wrong with thinking for one's self and NOT doing what the Romans do, just because you're in Rome? Unless you're in prison, you really don't HAVE to do anything. And one could also LEAVE Rome if one couldn't stand being around Romans and what they do. You can keep your frozen treats to yourself, I'm not hungry anymore. Thanks.

The best way to understand a cultural difference is to experience it...not on the tourist level, but a more intimate basis. No, I doubt I would go for the ice cream, and this is my choice in such a situation...I doubt that I would find it pleasureable to bang a live monkey's head in to eat it's brains, either...but there are folks on the Food Network who travel & experience all means of indiginous cuisines...I am not so daring in that aspect...I'm pretty careful about the waters, too.

Maybe I have understood wrong but I always thought that this phrase is an advice to someone who is not Roman and so it is an advice for any foreigner or traveler. In that case the meaning would be that when you go somewhere you should respect the customs and try to follow them. Which, unless people there have such strange taste for ice cream, is a good advice.

Well, if you don't, your head could be served in the next main course, in some cultures. Think objectively, about the truth of the world, and the many different cultures. Your analogy was uncouth and highly endemic of the Maddison & Wall superiority complex. You obviously haven't travelled anywhere for any amount of time.

Im not really sure that you need an answer. People do stupid stuff, but if you ask whether or not they question it, well DUH!!! YOU are questioning it. Everyone has disagreements with everyone else. The key thing about 'peer pressure', if thats what you are referring to, is that usually the majority decides what is right and what is wrong--

Ethics are like fashion, they change all the time, trying to find unique ways to cover the same subjects.

Within reason. We don't have to jump off the cliff like lemmings but it can't hurt to immerse yourself in local customs & embrace other ways of life.

I don't drink coffee & tea at home but "when in Rome" I drank espresso with my zia & it was delicious! & I drank tea in London with my boyfriend's Aunt. But no I would have to just say no to the feces flavoured ice cream...That's not chocolate!!

:)
Have a mind of your own. But keep it open. It can't hurt to try new things. So long as they're not disgusting, immoral or illegal...

it refers to soceity in general not just one case as if one roman was to jump off of the top of st peters basiclica it is not soceity jumping but one individual as there are many more romans not jumping off of the top of the basillica than are shouldn't you do as the majority does? Therefore shouldn't the same apply to ice creame or ice creame subsitutes?

No at all.

If you feel that you are right and you can lead the nation well then this maxim shall be written as:

"Do at Rome what you should do, time will come they will follow you."
