Well done, Maddie Dear! My Grandfather was a Seabee in WWII, making landing strips and whether a soldier fought then or now he/she is fighting for the rights we enjoy as Americans. Until the Shrub signed the Marriage Act the Constitution did not define one man and one woman as marraige. We wisely left religion out of government for a good reason. Just because two people can't produce children doesn't give them the reson *not* to be married -- look at the huge amount of straight people who can't produce viable children on their own and who have to rely on either invitro fertilization or surrogates. In Asia they're throwing away live girl babies (but that's a whole other kettle or fish....)
but we're not allowed to marry nor adopt. Ah religion, the multi-headed hydra.

Most of the questions of this nature can be concluded with one word -- F.E.A.R. Which isn't actually a word at all, but an acronym that stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. The people currently holding the power over the rest of us are afraid of us. They are afraid that we will screw up there lives in quite the same way that they have fought to screw up our lives thus far. That is the FALSE EVIDENCE. Although, the blacks fought for equality and have not settled for anything so far and around there the rest of us live in the wake of their ternary. So, maybe it’s not so much False Evidence after all.
Your grandfather may have fought for "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness as inalienable rights set forth by our founding fathers." But, if you had cornered him at the time and really quizzed him you would have found out that he fought for the status quo. That is to say that he fought for America and all that it stood for, but he also fought for what he was taught was the way things were in the world. I think that if you had given him, or any of the other thousands of service men and women that fought in World War II, the choice of fighting for homosexual's rights to the same things that they themselves had the rights to they would have turned you down. No, they fought for America as a whole and didn't think about the special interest groups (which GLBT is a SIG).
We have to be thankful for what we have and deal with what we don't have. The world is quickly evolving and all people’s rights are being considered. I live in Louisiana. In the town in which I live we just elected a black, African American, brown, afro-American or what ever else kind of title they want us to bestow upon them this week, mayor and that couldn't have happened any sooner than it did. As long as we keep our opinions known and keep fighting for what we feel is right change will come for us as well.
I'm a member of a local political group called Political Action Council for Equality or P.A.C.E. and I would suggest that you get as involved in your own future as you can to bring about the changes that your grandfather fought for, whether he meant to or not.

i'm pretty sure alot of our grand parents/great grand parents / forefathers etc were involved in that war, and the one before it.. they were both fought in an effort to keep the world free.
but sadly, those values and beliefs seem to be slowly getting washed away with the tide, recently in the UK we've been granted Civil Unions, and the ability to adopt, but we're still the subject of prejudice, and America hasn't got either of those things as a whole.
its saddening to think that so many gave their lives to uphold values which today, people don't think twice about trampling.
still, as Martin Luther King fought for equality from racism, as suffragettes and suffragists fought for womens equality in the workplace, we too must fight against the prejudice of today, in an effort to make the world a better place for the next generation, as the generation before us has done for us.

Why is it so infuriating to you people that you have to fight for your rights? You want to change peoples opinions of what is and what is not acceptable in our current culture such as , the right to marry your same sex lover?
Work on it ....it's not going to happen over night....change peoples perception that being gay is not a hereditary right ...the tide of change is not an easy thing ....hell, go for a swim in the Hudson river and complain that you don't get a free ride to Canada....that damn river only goes one way.....human nature dosn't !!!Work on it and quit whining !

Because people are stupid, and will ostracize anything they don't understand, or anything different. It's unfair and not right. Just because I'm heterosexual doesn't make me a better or worse person than homosexuals, bisexuals, or Trans genders.
It's not fair and it should be stopped. Everyone should have the right to have/adopt a kid, or to marry!

The US government has always oppressed its citizens, but nobody takes action until it goes too far. Right now, theres not really that many people active in our rights and movements.
