The Beatles got taxed 98p out of every Pound they made. It made them pretty angry, and it made the Queen a lot of money. So to thank them (or calm them down) she knighted them. A lot of war veterans were so angry that they sent back their own OBE's (the Beatles were supposed to be subversive in those days).

I think she also knighted the Rolling Stones for the same reason.

Because he is the probably most successful songwriter of the 20th century and there is a long tradition of knighting people for contribution to the arts. By the time he got his knighthood Cliff Richard already had one, even though his impact on culture was nowhere near as significant or as widespread.

Frankly, if Andrew Lloyd Webber is a lord then Paul McCartney should be one, too.

It called a Knighthood the Prime Minister decide who is to receive a Knighthood. The Queen doesn't personally pick someone. It called the Honours lists; this is done twice a year.

Twice a year there is the honours list.
