I agree with you that Broduer is overrated, not the most in history though. *cough, rick dipietro, cough* For those who don't know, the Isles got rid of roberto luongo, for dipietro, but anyway....
Brouduer is good, no doubt about that, but, were he on, lets say, the San Jose Sharks he would not have as many records. He benefits from the Neutral Zone Trap system of hockey , which the Devils are most known for. He plays his best when the opposition isn't able to get in too close too often. Had he been on, again, the Sharks, lets say, he would've still been good, but not a living legend as he is now.

No player alone wins championships, but Brodeur is always at least in the top 3 for every one his teams win. Goalies who don't have the skills to back up the hype generally do not have 3 Stanley Cups, an Olympic Gold, 2 Vezinas and 494 career NHL wins.

Martin Brodeur will be 35 when next season starts. Dominik Hasek and Ed Belfour are 42. It's not unreasonable to expect Brodeur could play that long. If he got at least 20 wins per season over the next 7 seasons, he would end his career with 634. 83 more than Patrick. I'm guessing it's going to be waaaaay more. Even if Brodeur retired at the same age as Roy, after two more seasons, Marty will retire the wins leader as long as he gets only 30 wins per season. Since he's never had LESS than 30 playing a full season, it's a pretty safe bet it's going to happen.

That's a tough question. On the one hand, he's definitely one of the best goalies of all time. On the other hand, the publicity he gets would make you think that he's head and shoulders above everyone else who ever played the position... and that's just not true. Roberto Luongo, Patrick Roy, and Dominik Hasek are/were all better goalies than Brodeur. If anyone should be getting the kind of God-like adulation that Brodeur gets, it's Hasek. He led the league in save percentage five years in a row and finished in the top five another two years after that. No other goalie has ever come close to doing that.

First of all his name is spelled Brodeur. Second, he is on pace to break every goalie record in the NHL. There is nothing over rated about him. He led the league this year in shutouts and wins. His goals against average was in the top 3 in the league. He has his name on the stanley cup 3 times and is still going strong. He also has 2 vezina trophies and will likely add another one from this season. People who claim he is "overrated" are just jelous he isnt on thier fav team cause hes the best goalie to ever play hockey. Bottom line. For the person who was yapping about him f_cking his wifes sister, who gives a crap. That has nothing to do with what he does on the ice. The guy made a mistake and im sure youre no angel so who are you to judge what kind of person he is?

Put down the crack pipe, my friend. I personally can't stand the guy, I'm a Ranger fan (yes, I can admit I have a problem. That is the first step, after all). However, I grew up in Jersey; and after first going to games & watching Chico Resch in goal...once Marty came up, you had to be in awe of the guy. Don't forget, the Devils didn't always play the horrible trap, and he had some pretty awful teams in front of him for a little while.
In the world of "what if" fantasy-I'd take Marty in his prime over Roy, or anyone not named Dominic Hasek, for that matter.
My vote for most overrated ever would be Ron Hextall.

I agree that he is overated, just not the most overated ever.

You take away the system that the Devils have played since his rookie season, and the talent he has had infront of him the majority of his career, the numbers may be different.

Think about it. Isn't it easier to get shut outs when you only face 10-20 shots a game as opposed to most goalies who see 25-35? If he actually had a regular workload, he probably wouldn't be playing 78 games a year.

In his defense, he hasn't had a reliable back-up since Terarri was traded. And he is a great goalie. He is just hyped up so much that it is impossible for him not to be overated.

He may have 3 cups, but unlike Roy, he has not Con Smyth Trophies.

Lets see...... he has played 891 games the last 14 season...he has won 494 or those...he has 92 Career shut outs and a career 2.20 GAA and a .913 save percentage. He won the carder trophy as the NHL Rookie of the year (93-94), the Jennings trophy 4 times for the lowest GAA in a season, 2 Vezina's as the most outstanding goaltender, 3 Stanley cups, 1 Olympic gold medal, has played in numerous All-star games.....yeah I can not believe why they say he is a good goaltender.....he sucks

I will confess a certain bias upfront as I am a New Jersey Devils fan, but if anything Martin Brodeur is underrated. The Devils have won 3 Stanley Cups largely on his back. He never has played behind a premier offense ( ala Fuhr in Edmonton and Roy in Colorado) and has had to carry the Devils a lot of times.

My opinion is if you are going to make a statement like that you need to present us with something supporting that "argument".

The things he's accomplished (see upstairs) speak for themselves. And this year all he did was set the record for games played. The best Goaltender in NHL history, yes? Overrated? With all due respect, that's crazy.

What are you talking about? Perhaps you meant to type "greatest" instead of "most overrated." That would be the only situation I could see, unless you're on something of course. You're either a) from New York, Philly, or Pittsburgh, b) have been living under a rock the past 15 or so years, or c) you're on something. The only possiuble knock on Brodeur that is semi-accurate is his struggles in the shootout, which mean less than nothing compared to his great achievments.
