Is that the only thing that will cause this? I went to get my egr valve and o2 sensor changed on my car this morning. My oil light was not on and had never been on. When I went to pick up my car from the shop, the mechanic advised me that I needed an oil change. So I let him change the oil. Once I got in the car, the oil light was on and would not go off. I got five minutes down the road and my car shut off. It would not start back. The mechanic says it is my oil pump. It is making a loud knocking noise. I heard this noise before but it was very quiet, and I was told that it was just my valve cover gasket. Is it worth changing the oil pump in this car or should I just buy a new one? Could it be some other problem?

Did you check the oil? if not check it because they may have not got the oil filter tight or the drain plug back in or tight or they may have forgot to refill it with oil i have also saw many fram oil filters to be defective and after a oil change the car would have low or no oil pressure at all or if the car has a lite the lite would be on stay away from fram oil filters. if you had no trouble before either you have a incompetent mechanic or your being scammed.. get a second opinion and a lawyer fast!!!

Bad Oil Pump

Oil pumps do not make loud, clacking noises.

From your description it seems more likely there was no oil in the engine, or not enough oil, and the sound your are hearing is bearings that went bad after five minutes with insufficient or no lubrication..

Have another mechanic check it, and get a written report from him/her. Then take your receipt back to the first place and ask for a new engine.

ford are the worse for weak oil pump,, if it comeing from the front ,i say yes it the pump,, a pump , not that hard to change, an be cheaper than buying a nother car,, but before i do much. i take a look at the oil fiter, some time when you pull, the fitter off, the old rubber ring will stay on the motor, in which, will let it loose the oil,,

If the oil light was on, you should have never left the shop. You may really have a problem now. If the oil pump got airlocked or maybe they forgot to add oil to the engine. I have heard of that happening.

If you ran it without oil, you could have just fried the engine, certainly didn't do it any good at best.

Best start getting your info together, this sounds like a lawsuit, if they won't admit their mistake. Most wont own up to it. good luck.

Bad oil pump would prevent proper circulation, which the oil cannot lubricate the parts so they would clank. If you are certain this is the case, go to autozone and get a manual for your car (I would get one anyway, they are excellent references) and it will give you in depth details in there for how to change it.
