My son is supposed to do a project for school to make a submarine that will float-sink-float or sink-float-sink. Any suggestions on how to do this and if you could help me explain why it works to him also would be greatly appreciated!

What you want is a baking powder submarine. This site shows how to make one with a carrot. http://www.coolscienceclub.tripod.com/baking_powder_submarine.html

These objects are in existence as toys and ornaments. The general principle is to generate a gas, for instance by using Alka-Seltzer tablets, in a confined space. This will cause the vessel ro rise. When the vessel reaches the surface, the shape of the vessel will cause it to tip over and release the gas, causing it to sink. The cycle then repeats.

Do NOT explain why it works to him. That will more or less guarantee that he doesn't learn any science from it. Build it, let him play with it, and ask him to tell you how it works. The reference is to a system that will let him really learn the principles involved, getting it so it works is finicky enough that you'll probably have to help with the building.
