While it is true that they could use a cross bow, they were large, cumbersome and difficult to weild. If you didn't know what you were doing, it was pretty well useless. While a long bow was easier to use, it took far more skill to use it effectively. A sword could be swung like a baseball bat and still be effective.

Uhm...Where have you been the last ??? years?
Swords were used to kill people, and in some cases a few stray animals. Swords were a War Weapon. Not mainly used for the day to day. But kept for defence and protection.
They didnt have to have dragons to be destructive. Man killed everything around him.

What makes you think the spell checker doesn't work?

What's a 'medival'?

Ok, how do swords equate to dragons?

There are swords today. Does that mean there are dragons around today?

The same reason they had swords 100 years ago. For killing other people before they could kill you (longer sword, longer reach).

Because swords were used to kill people and defence in war, and other places.

Dragons? We have guns now and it's not because of space aliens. You figure it out.
